Core FrenchThe Core French Program begins in Grade 4 and continues up to Grade 12. The program is designed to develop basic communication skills in French with opportunities for students to engage in daily oral interaction and gain an intercultural awareness and competence. Students entering Grade 4 must receive French instruction in every year up to Grade 8, unless they are enrolled in an Extended French or French Immersion program.
The Extended French (EF) program is a DPCDSB program of choice offered from Grades 5 to 12 in designated schools. With its Grade 5 entry point, this program offers students the opportunity to be successful in both of Canada’s official languages. The program provides students with the means to develop more advanced French skills, enabling them to communicate effectively in both listening and speaking, as well as reading and in writing.
French Immersion
The French Immersion Program begins in Grade 1 and continues up to Grade 12. The program is designed to give students whose first language is not French the opportunity to learn in the French language. DPCDSB offers the French Immersion Program starting in Grade 1 at eight school sites.
International & Indigenous Languages
The Adult and Continuing Education Department offers classes for elementary and secondary students in 27 languages on Saturdays through the school year.
English Language Learners
DPCDSB offers support to students whose first language is a language other than English or is a variety of English significantly different from that used for instruction in Ontario schools.
